Heat Treatment for Export Wood Packaging
Solid-wood pallets, crates, dunnage, and packaging used in international trade may require treatment under ISPM 15. The standard is intended to reduce the international movement of pests that can be carried in untreated wood packaging.
Heat treatment can be applied to standard or custom pallets, wooden crates, dunnage, blocking, bracing, and other qualifying solid-wood components. Requirements can vary by destination, packaging construction, and shipping program, so customers should provide any instructions received from their freight forwarder, customer, or export documentation.
Treatment, Verification, and Marking
During heat treatment, the wood must reach the required internal temperature for the specified amount of time. Under the ISPM 15 heat-treatment schedule, the wood core must reach at least 56°C, or approximately 133°F, for a minimum of 30 continuous minutes.
After qualifying treatment, the wood packaging is marked with the appropriate ISPM 15 identification. Heat treatment is different from kiln drying: heat treatment addresses the required phytosanitary process, while kiln drying is primarily intended to reduce moisture content.
